URD 330 • Philosophy and Poetry of Iqbal

Course Description

Muhammad Iqbal is undoubtedly the most influential Muslim philosopher that the South Asian subcontinent has produced in the last millennium. Iqbal's poetry and philosophy cannot be fully comprehended without some background knowledge of the socio-political milieu in which he wrote and the links he had with the past traditions of Perso-Urdu literature. This course will probe the role of Iqbal as a poet, philosopher and reformer and consider the impact he has had on subsequent Urdu tradition as well as on politics of Pakistan. We will assess Iqbal’s pivotal notions of the divine, self, community and womankind, illustrated through his Urdu poetry and prose.

Grading Policy

5 Short Papers: 50% Mid-Term Exam: 20% Final Research Paper: 30%
