ANS 388 • A Critical Approach to the Study of South Asian Texts
3:00 PM-6:00 PM
This graduate-level seminar will provide students with an introduction to literary theory and its particular applicability in reading and analyzing South Asian literature. During the course of the semester, we will explore Indian "classics" on connoisseurship, reader-response, style, and suggestion, as well as modern and contemporary works on literary theory from the west. Each week, we will pair up a literary text from South Asia (broadly defined) with an appropriate critical work. The goal of the seminar is to give students an ability to read and write critically, and to "use" theory in an appropriate fashion; that is, to inspire synthetic analysis without "applying" theory dogmatically.
