Course Description
This course will cover the expansion into south and southeast Asia of the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French in the Age of Discovery, the period when European explorers, merchants, mercenaries, and missionaries went to "The Indies" in search of adventure, riches, spices, souls and dominion. We will examine the beginnings of empire, and look not only at the European impact upon Asia, but also the Asian impact upon the economic, political and cultural life of Europe.
