Course Description

This course examines how new and popular religious movements in China, Japan and Korea, from the mid-19th century to the present, have served as a source of resistance and rebellion against central authorities. We will use primary and secondary works to compare accounts of religious resistance from multiple viewpoints including central authorities, bystanders, media, and believers.
