Course Description

This seminar critically examines major contemporary approaches to the study of religion, especially as they have been applied to the study of Asian religions. The course will center on close study of contemporary theories and works and their context in the history and the development of the field of religious studies. Among the topics included will be the use and interpretation of texts in the study of religion, the integration of fieldwork research and textual study, and the suppositions and presuppositions that govern the interpretation of religion.
