Japan Seminar: The Limits of Liberalism: Japan's Relevance to America's Modern Social Crisis.
Mon, February 15, 2010 • 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM • Meyerson Conference Room WCH 4.118
Dr. Amy Borovoy, Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, shall present a talk entitled "The Limits of Liberalism: Japan's Relevance to America's Modern Social Crisis." The talk will explore a series of American thinkers who have turned to Japan to reflect on the limits of American liberal individualism. In doing so, they invoked the work of a number of Japanese thinkers who were, in turn, struggling to articulate their own cultural identity. Returning to this dialog highlights the tension between classical liberal ideals of autonomy and choice on the one hand, and the trust and security born of participation in communities of shared values on the other.
