Asoka: In History and Historical Memory

Participants: Professor Richard Salomon from the University of Washington-Seattle will present "Asoka and the Epigraphic Habit in India." Professor Janice Leoshko from the University of Texas at Austin will present "Asoka: Assessing the Visual Evidence." Professor Klaus Karttunen from the University of Helsinki, Finland, will present "Asoka and the Mauryas: A Greco-Roman Perspective." Professor Max Deeg from the University of Vienna, Austria, will present "From the Iron Wheel to Bodhisattvahood: Asoka in Buddhist Culture and Memory." Professor Madhav Deshpande from the University of Washington-Seattle, will present "Devanam priyah and sramana-brahmana in the Brahmanical Tradition." Professor John Strong from Bates College will present "Asoka and the Lotus Sutra."
