Fueled by a domestic logging ban in 1998 and by rising consumption, China has rapidly emerged as the world's largest importer of wood products, with Russia by far its most important supplier. This allows us to consider to what degree these "buyer-driven" commodity chains can indeed influence forest management at the timber harvest site, in this case, the forests of the Russian Far East.
