Dr. Gail Hershatter, Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is a leading scholar of modern Chinese social and cultural history whose work particularly engages issues of labor history, women's history, the history of sexuality, history, memory, and nostalgia, and feminist theory.
Her most recent book publication is Women in China's Long Twentieth Century (University of California International and Area Studies Project, in conjunction with the University of California Press and the California Digital Library, 2006). She is also the author of Dangerous Pleasures: Prostitution and Modernity in 20th-Century Shanghai. (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1997), which won the American Historical Association's Joan Kelly Memorial Prize in Women's History.
