Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Chair candidate talk

Fri, April 3, 2009 • 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM • Gebauer 3.312, Dean's Conference Room

This presentation addresses recent developments in the Japanese pilgrimage market, focusing in particular on how pilgrimage temple associations have joined with commercial agencies, mass media organizations, and/or regional civil authorities to sponsor exhibitions and other pilgrimage events in a variety of settings. Dr. Reader locates these activities in a wide historical context to show how these are not simply modern developments but rather representative of common and normative patterns of pilgrimage more generally. He argues that studies of pilgrimage need to pay more attention to such issues as commercialization and the role of religious and other authorities in producing, promoting and sustaining pilgrimages. Ian Reader is a candidate for the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Chair in Japanese Studies
