Biography
Professor Hardgrave is a specialist in comparative politics, with an area focus on the domestic and international politics of South Asia. Working principally on India, he has conducted research on a wide range of topics, including politics and social change, ethno-nationalism, and ethnic and religious conflict. Prof. Hardgrave has served as a consultant on South Asia for the U. S. Department of State and as senior advisor for South Asia for Political Risk Services, Inc. He taught in the Department of Government from 1967 until his retirement in 2001.

Among his publications are The Nadars of Tamilnad: The Political Culture of a Community in Change (1969, 2006); Comparative Politics: The Quest for Theory (with James A. Bill, 1973, 1981); Essays in the Political Sociology of South India (1993); and India: Government and Politics of a Developing Nation (with Stanley A. Kochanek, 7th ed., 2007). He is also the author of American Government, a high school text. In a project on the Flemish artist Balthazar Solvyns, who worked in India from 1791-1803, Prof. Hardgrave has published books on Solvyns's portrayal of Indian musical instruments and of the boats of Bengal. A Portrait of the Hindus: Balthazar Solvyns and the European Image of India was published by Oxford University Press in 2004.
