Course Description
This is a first semester introductory level course geared towards training students in the foundations of Malayalam which will encompass the learning of alphabets, bi- and multi-sentence structure and informal conversational exchange. The class will meet five hours per week and will carry five hours of credit.
Objective:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
[A] Read and write within two weeks.
[B] Listen and understand small sentences which are essential for day to day life within one month.
[C] Speak the language with fellow students without any hesitation.
[D] Acquire the basic structure of the Malayalam language.

Course Description
312 K MAL
Prerequisite: MAL 507 or Equivalent
Second year MAL 1 geared towards training students in acquisition of different styles of writing with the help of some selected essays and short stories. The class will meet three hours per week and will carry three hours of credit. At the end of the course the student can write and speak the language without any hesitation and narrate a specific topic.

teaches vocabulary, conversation, grammar, and cultrual information and features a proficiency-based
approach. A compter-aided program helps in mastering the Malayalam script and in memorizing
vocabulary. Prerequisites: MAL 506 or the equivalent.

Final exam, or project (30%) Average score of all homework assignments (30%)
