How to Apply for Admission to Graduate Study

For general information about admission to graduate study at the University of Texas, please consult:

To apply for admission to the graduate program in Classics, you must submit materials to two separate offices: the Department of Classics, and the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC). It is your responsibility to make sure that all materials reach the appropriate destination. If you have any questions, please contact the Graduate Coordinator.

1. Department of Classics

Mail the following material directly to the Department of Classics at the address below. Only paper copies are accepted; faxes or emails will not be processed.

  • Contact information (your mail and email addresses, phone number/s)
  • Statement of Purpose (also submitted online to GIAC; see below)
  • Writing Sample of 15-20 pages (about 4,000 words; not submitted to GIAC)

2. Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC)

Submit the following material to GIAC as described below, either electronically or by mail to the address below. Where possible, we urge you to submit materials online at ApplyTexas.

  • Texas Common Application for Admission to Graduate Study (U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents only) OR Texas Common Application for Students from Other Countries (international applicants). NOTE: the “Major Code” for Classics is 623200.
  • Statement of Purpose (uploaded as part of the Texas Common Application).
  • Three letters of recommendation (for advice about online submission, see below).
  • Official, sealed transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended; transcripts must be mailed directly to GIAC (address below) by each institution.
  • Official report of GRE scores; the report is mailed directly to GIAC (address below) by the testing agency.
  • Official report of TOEFL scores (international students only); the report is mailed directly to GIAC (address below) by the testing agency.
  • Certificate of financial responsibility (international students only).
  • Application fee payment (U.S. applicants $50.00; all others $75.00).

Online recommendations

When you complete the “references” portion of the online application, you are asked to provide the names and email addresses of those from whom you have requested letters of recomendation. Be sure that the email addresses are accurate. Your letter writers will receive an email message with instructions on how to submit their recommendations electronically. We strongly advise you to check with your letter writers to make sure they receive those instructions.
