Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the language, narrative, and poetics of the Greek epic tradition: Homer. Apart from acquiring a reasonable "reading knowledge" of the epic, we will be busy with the following issues: o knowledge of peculiarities of epic diction (morphology, dialect forms, etc.) o epic meter: the dactylic hexameter o oral poetry and the system of formulas Evaluation and grading o quizzes 25% o midterm 25% o final 50% Required Text: TBA
