Course Description
In this course we will read much of what survives from the Greek female poets of antiquity. Of course, a large part of the readings will be the poems of Sappho, but we will also look at the fragments of Erinna, the little that remains of Corinna and the epigrams written by female poets in the Palatine Anthology. Wewill also read a few poems by male poets for comparative purposes. When translating and interpreting the poems we will consider the conditions of a woman's life in the ancient world and how these may have contributed to the emotions expressed in the poems. The readings will be available as a Course packet from Speedway.
