Course Description

This course aims to further the advanced student's knowledge of Herodotus and his world. Emphasis will be placed on Herodotuss writing, style, vocabulary, and dialect, on translation, on Herodotuss place within Greek culture, and on introducing the student to the vast bibliography on Herodotus and (more generally) Greek historiography and his place in it. We shall read two full books (1 and 9, with very different subject matter), in order to attain the best possible understanding of Herodotus overall. Other selected "greatest hits" passages may also be assigned if time permits. The amount of reading will run about 5-7 OCT pages per class. We shall also read the entire History in translation, and students will report on topics such as Herodotus and religion, Herodotus and the Persian Wars, Herodotus within the Ionian intellectual flowering, etc. The final grade will be determined as follows: Two midterms, 15% each Final examination, 20% Class participation (including reports), 30% Writing assignment (either a formal paper or a professional-style book review on a recent work on Herodotus), 20%
