LAT 506Q • Accelerated First Year Latin

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites; LAT 506Q may be used as part of the language requirement, as an elective, or as part of the Area D requirement. The course may not be counted by students offering two or more admission units or any previous college credit in Latin. The course includes all the material covered in two semesters in the regular LAT 506-507 sequence and is geared towards both graduate students and undergraduates who have a keen interest in languages and are willing to devote the time and energy needed to complete the course work. In order to advance to the intermediate Latin class (LAT 311) you need to receive a grade of C or higher. Students taking LAT 506Q Pass-Fail cannot be admitted to LAT 311 without the instructor's approval. The prerequisite for LAT 511 (accelerated intermediate class) is a grade of A in LAT 506Q. Objectives: --to learn the basic facts about the history of the Latin language and literature, etymology, and pronunciation. --to learn the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary in Wilding, parts 1-3. --to translate sentences and continuous passages from English to Latin. --to read and translate sentences and continuous passages illustrating points of Latin grammar, syntax, and prose style, as well as of Roman history, literature and culture. --to translate sight passages indicating a reasonable understanding of Latin grammar, syntax, and style --to recognize and appreciate the importance of the Latin language and Roman culture for European and American history and culture.
