Course Description
Juvenal is a wonderful but difficult author. I know we are going to read S. 1, , 3,5, 6 and also 10, the enormous and mannered satire on women (we'll see whether we believe Susanna Braund in her argument that "MCP" is not the proper response), and carefully and in detail so the Silveriness of his Satirical Latin becomes less difficult as we go. Courtney's great commentary will be on reserve for us. But we'll work with what's economically available, the OCT of Clausen and the commentary of Rudd-Courtney on 1.3, 10 (if we get so far) and Richlin on 6. *I will make a handout to buy at the copiers' of commentaries on the others.* Translation and scansion quizzes, 20% (given any day), 3 hour tests 60%,
