Course Description

Multiple sections: AHC 319 32940 MW 10-11 WAG 101; TH 9-10 CBA 4.326 32945 MW 10-11 WAG 101; F 10-11 RAS 215 32950 MW 10-11 WAG 101; F 1-2 MEZ 1.212 32955 MW 10-11 WAG 101; TH 4-5 GEO 2.102 AHC/CC 319D is a survey of the history, culture, and society of the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Italy) from ca. 3000 B.C. to A.D. 476 focusing on the active cultural exchange among the diverse civilizations of the broader region that shaped their history and cultural identity and the development of ideas and institutions in the Greek and Roman worlds. It is intended to provide participants with a historical framework, to serve as a gateway to more advanced study of the ancient Mediterranean world, and to introduce students to the sources and methods used in its study. The course consists of two lectures and one mandatory discussion section per week.
