Course Description

This course is designed to give intermediate and advance students experience and facility with elements of koine (or Hellenistic) Greek as employed in the earliest Christian "history," The Acts of the Apostles. For those at the intermediate level (GK 328) the class will focus on reading and translating the Greek of Acts with grammatical and syntactic analysis. Since Acts is part of a two-volume work by the same author as the Gospel of Luke, we will also read some passages in the Gospel for stylistic comparison, as well as samples from other historical prose works by non-Christian authors. Students will be introduced to critical issues in ancient historiography and with tools of textual study, e.g., concordance and lexical aids. For those at the advanced level (GK 362) there will be an additiional written project for comparing the style and composition of Acts with other Hellenistic historical literature. All students are expected to be prepared for daily readings in class of assigned sections of text. The schedule of readings plus additional readings and preparation will be given at the beginning of the semester. There will be regular in-class quizzes, as well as a Mid-Term and a Final Exam. Grading: 328 Class preparation/reading 25% Quizzes 25% Exams (mid-term and final) 50%
