Course Description
This course will introduce students to the major authors and themes in Latin literature, from its origins through the fourth century CE. We will read a wide range of Latin authors in the original (about 500 verses or the equivalent amount of prose per week) and discuss both literary history and questions surrounding criticism and methodology. Grades will be based on a mid-term exam, a final exam, and class participation (including oral presentations).
Texts
G.B. Conte, Latin Literature: A History (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999). Course packet with selections from Latin authors.
