Course Description
This course has two aims: to help you increase your fluency in Latin through reading, translating, and analyzing connected passages of prose and poetry, and to introduce you to Roman history and culture through the reading. PREREQUISITES: LAT 506-507, 506Q, or 508, or the equivalent in a placement exam, with a grade of at least C. CLASS STRUCTURE: During each class we will practice accurate translations of prepared and sight passages from the textbooks and other sources. We will emphasize reading of the Latin, analysis of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, and a careful translation. We will discuss the authors of the different passages, and the cultural framework of the historical and literary texts. TESTS: In addition to pop quizzes on vocabulary and grammar, the testing will consist of four quizzes, three tests and a final exam. Both quizzes and tests will include translation of prepared passages, with detailed questions on grammar, syntax, and contents. In addition, the hour tests and final will include sight passages. GRADING: class participation and course involvement 20% three best quizzes 30% two best hour tests 30% final exam 20%
