LAT 385 • Ovid

The seminar, a research seminar, will concentrate on the Metamorphoses with comparative glances at the Fasti. Both works are unparalleled and have received increasing interpretive attention in recent years. We'll examine the many dimensions esp. of the Metamorphose--such as Ovid's reworking of previous versions of the myths, the role of author and reader, the Augustan setting of the poem, its relation to Vergil's Aeneid, and the reasons for its bountiful reception in later literature and art--and the utility of various approaches. There is the strong likelihood that Professor Alessandro Barchiesi of the University of Siena will conduct several sessions of the seminar.
Some translation exams to make sure that major portions of the poem are being read and a substantial term paper/report. Working knowledge of at least one foreign language (French, German, Italian) is required.
