Course Description

This course will examine evolving concepts of gender and sexuality through a close reading of lyric poems, elegies, and epigrams from the archaic period to Hellenistic times, with detailed attention to both thematic continuities and cultural differences. Authors covered will include Mimnermus, Anacreon, Ibycus, Theognis, Callimachus, Meleager, and other epigrammatists of the Hellenistic Age. At the end of the course, we will devote a detailed examination to the female poets Sappho and Nossis.
