Course Description
The comedies of Menander are both a delightful and valuable source of information on ancient Greek daily life and a key foundation of modern comic drama. In this course we will read in Greek Menander's Dyskolos and portions of other plays and will discuss elements of performance, Menander's language and style, and the ideology and influence of the plays. Students taking the course for graduate credit will read parts of additional Menandrian plays in Greek and additional scholarly articles. Grading: Weekly quizzes 20%, Class participation, 20%, Short paper, 20%, Final exam, 40%
