Course Description
This class examines Modern Western European History from the Reformation to the present. In the course of the semester, students will become familiar with many of the leading figures, ideas, and events of the modern world. While the history of "great men" will be examined, this course will also trace the changing experiences of ordinary people, as they encountered religious, political and industrial upheaval over the course of four centuries. Students will be exposed to the concerns and methods of historical inquiry through lectures, analysis and discussion of selected texts. The goal of this course is to give each student a solid historical understanding of the European past as well the tools needed for further scholarship in the humanities.
