GK 383 • 3-Thucydides
12:30 PM-2:00 PM
In this course we will read highlights from Thucydides' History. Class will be devoted to translation, with ample attention given to grammar, style, narrative techniques, and historiographical themes. We will also discuss Thucydides' place in the development of historiography, and the issues associated with a literary text that aims to write history.
Grade will be based on the quality of class translation and participation, a midterm and a final, and a short paper (ca. 5 pages). Graduate students in the class will be expected to read substantially more than undergraduates.
