Course Description

An introduction to one of Latin's most important literary genres. We shall try to read poems from the three premier love poets, Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid. It will be useful, as well, to compare the love poetry of Catullus and Vergil, who marked the way for the three authors I have highlighted. We shall study what remains of Cornelius Gallus, the great precursor of the Augustan Elegists. Grading: Three Hour Exams 33 1/3% each
