Course Description

This course will trace the history and types of Latin bookhands, principally Carolingian and Gothic hands. The first class will introduce the subject matter, the following classes will proceed in this order: Carolingian hands Pre-Carolingian hands Marovingian hands (charters) Late Roman Cursive, Early Roman Cursive Visigothic Capitalis Quadrata, Capitalis Rustica Uncial North Italian South Italian (Beneventan) Insular hands: Irish Uncial/Half-uncial; English Uncial/Half-uncial Review of Carolingian hands; introduction of Early Gothic Various types of Gothic (textual/currens/formata/bastarda) Various types of Scholastic hands Humanistic Scripts Grade: 50% (transcriptions); 50% (final exam) Final Exam: date and place various types of hands
