Kim Bowes, Cornell University: "Private Religion and the Rise of Christianity"

The history of Christianity had been dominated by its public face--by bishops, by great basilicas, by doctrinal stuggles. This talk addresses Christianity’s other history- the history of private worship in the home. Drawing on both archaeological and textual evidence, it describes the challenge that domestic worship presented to a still-nascent public institution.
