Yuhan Vevaina, Harvard University: "The 'Book of Kings' and the Zoroastrian Mythoepic Tradition in Early Islamic Iran"

Tue, April 6, 2010 • 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM • Texas Union 3.116 (Governors' Room)

This talk will examine the complex relationship between Ferdowsi's Shāhnāmeh and its, presumably, oral antecedents in Zoroastrian Iran. Certain Zoroastrian Middle Persian (Pahlavi) mythoepic texts from the late 9th century CE share striking parallels with Ferdowsi's national epic from a century later. These lesser known texts offer us unparalleled opportunities to examine Iranian literary traditions that flourished centuries before Ferdowsi and that have been received by us only partially. These tantalizing texts thus represent a small, but important, portion of the rich and diverse Iranian literary traditions that flourished in ancient and medieval Iran and, as such, they deserve greater attention.
