John Clarke, UT Austin: "When Aphrodite Became Venus: Love, Sex, and Security in Roman Visual Culture."
Tue, November 6, 2012 • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM • TRINITY UNIVERSITY, Ruth Taylor Recital Hall
Free admission. 2012 Trinity University Lennox Seminar: "Love and Desire in Antiquity." Dr. Clarke examines Roman sexual representations found in archaeological contexts to question their meanings for ancient viewers. From phallic amulets meant to protect the wearer from evil spirits to elegant paintings celebrating the gifts of Venus, he uncovers attitudes toward love, sex, and security that are quite different from our own. The Lennox Seminar is made possible by the Martha, David, and Bagby Lennox Foundation.
