Karanis, an agricultural settlement in the Fayum, has been excavated by the University of Michigan, and Cairo University. In 2005 research has been restarted by a team from UCLA in cooperation with the RUG (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands). The project is a diachronic study of the development and economic use of agriculture, and has a strong archaeobotanical slant. In relation to the archaeological work the team is also involved in the development of a site management project, because visiting Karanis today makes immanently clear what 80 years of exposure to wind and rain does to a mud brick town.
