ROME IN THE SECOND CENTURY BCE: AN AGE OF EMPIRE

This seminar focuses on art, architecture and politics in the first half of the second century BCE in Rome, when, fresh after defeating Hannibal, the city confronted radical change as its sphere of influence expanded into the eastern and western Mediterranean. Change proved unsettling in terms of (for instance) religion, civic identity and senatorial authority, and as the cityscape adapted to reflect Rome's newfound wealth and growing status in the Mediterranean, the stage was set for the civic discord that would bring down the Republic.
