Transferring into Economics
We are excited that you are interested in Economics. Here is some helpful pieces of information to make your transition here as smooth as possible. This applies to all external and internal transfer students.
1.) We highly recommend reading the piece on Becoming an Economics Major on the previous page of our website. It will help you understand what economics truly is and how it relates to your academic career here in the Department of Economics at UT-Austin.
2.) Applying to the Department of Economics.
- Internal Transfers: If you are an internal transfer student, visit the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office (GEB 2.200) and fill out a Change of College Form and a Declaration of Major Form. The change will take a few weeks.
- External Transfers: If you are admitted to UT-Austin through the College of Liberal Arts, you can automatically declare your economics major (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/majors/declare_a_major/).
3.) Calculus Requirement.
- Internal Transfers: We require Calculus as part of our major. At UT-Austin you can fulfill the calculus requirement by taking M408K, L and M or M408C and D. You must make a letter grade of “C” or better in each course.
- External Transfers: Please refer to the transfer equivalency website on the UT-Austin admission home page to see how your math credits transfer (http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/services/transfercredit.html). You must make a letter grade of “C” or better in each course for it to count.
4.) Introduction to Microeconomics (Eco 304K) and Introduction to Macroeconomics (Eco 304L). We accept these two courses transferred in from other colleges/universities. You must make a letter grade of “C” or better in each course.
5.) Eco 420K, Eco 320L and Eco 329.
- These courses are not transferable regardless of where you take them. We consider these courses as part of the Economics Core Curriculum and you must take them in residence at UT-Austin. The courses are as follow:
- Eco 420K Intermediate Microeconomic Theory
- Eco 320L Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory
- Eco 329 Economics Statistics
- You must make a letter grade of “C” or better in each course.
6.) Residency within the Economics Major.
- The major is a total of 25 hours and you must take 19 hours of economics courses here at UT-Austin. This means you may only transfer in 6 hours of coursework. The most common transfer courses are Introduction to Micro and Macro.
7.) You may not use another Statistics course in place of Economics Statistics.
- Many students transfer in with credit for Elementary Business Statistics (STA 309) and want to use it in place of our Economics Statistics (ECO 329). We do not accept STA 309 as a substitute for ECO 329.
8.) The University of Texas at Austin has a 60 hour residency requirement.
- You will have to complete 60 hours of coursework here at UT-Austin under the 2004-2006 Catalog.
