ECO-MPA Path
Students in the ECO-MPA Path earn a B.A. degree in Economics and a Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) degree from The University of Texas at Austin (U.T.). Students are admitted to the ECO-MPA path through Graduate Select Admission. This program enables outstanding undergraduates to complete twelve hours of graduate accounting courses in their senior year toward obtaining a masters degree.
Benefits of the ECO-MPA Path include, but are not limited to:
- Waiver of the application and transcript fees associated with graduate school admissions,
- Waiver of the GMAT score requirement,
- Reduction in the length of time to the MPA degree through the reservation of graduate courses for graduate credit,
- Payment of the reserved graduate credit at undergraduate tuition rates.
Deadline for Graduate Select Admission:
The deadline for Graduate Select Admission to the ECO-MPA Path is April 1 of the student's junior year. Students will be accepted for summer admission only and must complete at least 90 undergraduate hours before the summer of admission. There is no fee associated with applying to be nominated for Graduate Select Admission to the ECO-MPA Path.
Requirements:
To be eligible to be nominated for Graduate Select Admission to the ECO-MPA Path a student must have:
- Completed the following courses (or their equivalents):
ECO 304K, ECO 304L, ECO 420K, ECO 320L, ECO 329, M 408C (or M 408K or M 403K),
and M 408D (or M 408L or M 403L). - Earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average based on all courses taken at U.T.
- Earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average based on economics courses taken at U.T.
- Senior standing (90 or more hours) prior to fall admission.
- Optional: Introduction to Financial Accounting (ACC 311 or the equivalent) Although not required for nomination to the ECO-MPA Path, Introduction to Financial Accounting is a prerequisite to ACC 381-Financial Accounting, the first graduate-level course that is completed in the 2nd summer session after admission to the ECO-MPA Path. If ACC 311 or the equivalent is not completed, the student will be required to take ACC 311 in summer session 1 prior to enrolling in ACC 381. Introduction to Financial Accounting can be completed at another institution, including a community college.

In early April, economics majors submit the application form: "Application to be Nominated for Graduate Select Admission," along with their resumé, essay, and 3 recommendation letters (in sealed envelopes, with the recommender's signature across the seal) to the MPA Program office. Please note that only those letters of recommendation that come from tenure-track faculty at the university will be accepted. In mid-April, the MPA committee selects a group from the initial pool. The nominations and recommendation letters of the nominees are forwarded to the Graduate Select Admissions Committee for final selections. In early to mid May, the Graduate Studies office notifies those students who are accepted into the program.
ECO-MPA Path admissions are competitive and limited to program capacity. Satisfying the above minimum requirements above does not guarantee nomination for Graduate Select Admission to the ECO-MPA Path.
