Course Description

Inequality, pronounced feature of Latin American economic organization since before Columbus arrived, increased down to the present day, notwithstanding alternating periods of economic expansion and recessions. While Kuznets and others predicted that inequality would follow a U-shaped curve, there is little evidence that Latin America has, despite significant growth, begun to experience a lessening of inequality. There is a rapidly growing literature, with statistical evidence, to explore for alternative explanations and alternative proposals for the alleviation of inequality
