Advising Services
General Advising is open to anyone, on a walk-in basis during our regular office hours, year-round. General Advising includes everything from answering quick questions, to doing general planning, to discussing the major, to helping you sort out a problem.
Registration Advising is open to all Economics majors, on a walk-in basis during regular office hours, in designated periods. Registration Advising sessions begin a couple of weeks before the start of registration and are quick meetings to review your degree audit and discuss your courses for the coming semester.
Strategic Advising is open to all Economics majors, by appointment, year-round excluding select periods. It is required for Economics sophomores. In Strategic Advising sessions, an advisor works with you to develop a plan to graduation--incorporating course selection, extracurricular opportunities, and university programs and services--tailored to your academic/career interests and goals.
Success Advising is required for Liberal Arts majors on scholastic probation (below a 2.0 UT GPA), by appointment, upon notification of their status. In Success Advising sessions, an advisor explains the terms for getting off scholastic probation and/or avoiding scholastic dismissal, and strategies/services for improving performance.
On-Track Advising is required for Liberal Arts majors who have not completed 30 hours by the end of their second semester at UT, by appointment, upon notification of their status. In On-Track Advising sessions, an advisor documents the reason(s) you have not completed 30 hours, makes sure you have a plan to graduate in a timely manner, offers assistance and makes referrals (if needed) for any issues that may be impeding your progress.
General Advising is available throughout the year during regular office hours on a walk-in basis. We are happy to answer any questions you have about the major and/or your degree requirements, help you navigate UT policy, connect you to helpful services, and so on. Please feel free to come by and visit.
Walk-ins are met on a first-come, first-served basis. Session periods vary depending on the nature of the visit. Please bring your UT ID card so that you can swipe-in at our reception desk. The first available advisor will meet with you. If you prefer to meet with a specific advisor, you may request them. If you prefer to make an appointment ahead of time, it can usually be arranged by calling or emailing our office.
Registration Advising starts approximately two weeks prior to the start of registration for the next semester. This typically occurs mid-April for Summer and Fall registration, and late October for Spring registration. See the Academic Calendar for exact dates.
Please come prepared for a brief session, focusing on registration planning only. It is helpful to review your degree audit and the course schedule (if available) before coming in. The session will take less time if you are somewhat familiar with the degree requirements you are lacking, and have a tentative list of courses to take. Making a list of questions might also be helpful.
Registration Advising is done on a walk-in basis. The session is limited to 20 minutes. Walk-ins are met on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring your UT ID card so that you can swipe-in at our reception desk. The first available advisor will meet with you. If you prefer to meet with a specific advisor, you may request them. This is a busy time! Coming in before 10 am or after 3 pm may decrease your wait time.
Strategic Advising sessions are available year-round excluding the following periods:
- the first twelve class days of a semester
- during Registration Advising
- during registration and add/drops
All Economics majors are encouraged to participate in Strategic Advising. Economics majors are required to participate in at least one Strategic Advising session during their sophomore year (30-59 hours completed). Sophomores who have not participated will have a registration bar on their record.
Strategic Advising is on an appointment basis with an assigned advisor. The session takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Please contact the Economics Department Undergraduate Advising Office to make an appointment (512-471-2973, BRB 1.114). You will need to fill out a Strategic Advising Information Form (DOC, 77K) and return it to your advisor at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled meeting time.
SUCCESS Advising is required for Economics majors who have been notified by the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office that they are on scholastic probation. Those who are notified will have a registration bar on their records and should contact the Economics Undergraduate Advising Office for a Success Advising appointment.
S.U.C.C.E.S.S. stands for Support, Understanding, Commitment, and Conference to Enable Scholastic Strength. During the meeting you and your advisor will create a SUCCESS Agreement which details the terms by which you can be removed from scholastic probation and/or avoid scholastic dismissal. Success Agreements can only be done after the 12th class day of the semester in which you are on scholastic probation. For example, if you are notified at the end of the Fall semester that you will be placed on Scholastic Probation for the Spring semester, your Success Agreement must be created after the 12th class day of the Spring semester.
