2012-13 Larry Temple Scholarship Named
Posted: October 29, 2012
The 2012-13 Larry Temple Scholarship honors Larry Eugene Temple, an Austin lawyer and public servant. Temple graduated with a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1957, receiving a degree from The University of Texas Law School in 1959. A champion of higher education, Temple was chair of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as well as chair of the 1985 Select Committee on Higher Education.
This year, William Hoenig was one student awarded this scholarship. Will is a second-year student with majors in Plan II Honors, Computer Engineering, and Economics. When asked how this scholarship has affected him he states: "This scholarship has been an incredible opportunity for me. Along with the money, it has allowed me to meet fascinating people and attend interesting events with Larry and Louann Temple, and that has just been in the first month! I feel extremely honored and grateful."
Of the three majors Will is studying, he believes Economics is the driving force behind life. Will is passionate about Economics for two reasons. He says: "First, it merges human interests and quantitative reasoning, in ways useful not just in 'traditional economic matters matters', but also into the rest of the social sciences. Second, those 'traditional economic matters' are such a vital driving force for humanity that it is vital to understand them, even if it is a monumental challenge. My Economics major at UT has helped me explore in both of those directions, and it has furthered my passion greatly."
Congrats to Will for this distinguished honor.
