E 395M • BISHOP, FROST, MERRILL
11:00 AM-12:30 PM
We shall read widely in the three poets, interpreting individual poems as themselves, in relation to one another within each author's work, and in terms of comparison and contrast between and among the three authors, with references outward to commonly shared antecedents and contemporaries. In class discussions, we shall focus intensively on a number of poems selected to plumb each author's range, depth, idiosyncrasies and excellences.
Elizabeth Bishop, THE COMPLETE POEMS 1927-1979 (Farrar-Straus-Giroux).
Robert Frost, THE POETRY OF ROBERT FROST, ed. E. C. Lathem (Holt, Rinehart & Winston)
James Merrill, SELECTED POEMS, 1946-1985 (Knopf).
