E 341 • Short Story Workshop
1:00 PM-2:00 PM
This course is offered to students who have already taken E 325 and have developed a serious interest in wanting to write fiction. During the early weeks of the semester we shall study examples of the short story form: you will need to purchase a packet containing a selection of stories. Much of the rest of the semester will be devoted to a close criticism of stories written by the students in the class. Some sessions will be devoted to a discussion of literature with reference to chosen texts that will help us to broaden our view of the forms of fiction.
I emphasize the use of language, the creation of form and the development of an individual style; I attempt to let students discover the approach best for them, I do not prescribe what they should do.
Students are expected to write three short stories of about 10 pages (typed, double-spaced) each. They will need to make copies of the stories for each member of the class.
Your grade for this course will depend on:
1. The quality of your work
2. Class discussion
3. Regular attendance. It is most important that everyone be present promptly every day prepared to discuss the story under review.
