E 386L • Creative Writing: Workshop in Poetry

Course Description

This will be an ongoing seminar, meeting once a week. The main effort will be to read and to discuss poems written and submitted by members of the group, to try to develop a critical approach and vocabulary appropriate to the work in hand, in all its variety. In addition to this, we will be examining and discussing contemporary poetics--the methods and theories behind the work of certain notable poets, and their views on poetry. Members of the group will be encouraged not only to pursue their own writing, but also to think about their direction in these terms. We will read and discuss the work of other poets as well, in an anthology of contemporary poetry.
