Course Description

This course will introduce students to novels, poetry, and films that reflect various contexts for and approaches to learning and teaching. Students will be asked to consider how perspective (the student's, the teacher's, the administration's), space (nursery, schoolroom, high school), class/race/gender, and time period inform representations of the learning process. Additionally, we will look at the potential for fictional texts to provide examples of varied teaching techniques and learning styles, investigating the question of how (and if?) Anglo-American education has changed over time. This course offers future teachers, and other students interested in education generally, exposure to a wide spectrum of literature and the opportunity to think and write about fictional representations of teachers and students.

Grading Policy

Students will be required to write weekly responses to course materials, and will write and revise two longer formal essays. Students will also be asked to prepare short presentations on research topics not covered in class. These may include children's or young adult school stories, girls' school stories, or novels and films about college.

Informal writing: once a week, in class
Peer review: once for each formal writing assignment (3)
Two 3-page essays
One 5-6-page position paper
One take-home essay exam
