Course Description

An introduction to techniques of writing fiction. Students will read short stories, discuss them in writerly ways, do many directed writing exercises -- some graded, some not -- both in and out of class, and write three short stories. Much of the course will consist of workshop, in which students in groups led by TAs discuss each other's work. TAs will model how to discuss stories using appropriate terminology.

Grading Policy

Note: Student writing presented in multiple copies.

Short exercises and reading quizzes 15%
Scene 10%
First story 20%
Second story 25%
Third story 20%
Participation 10%

Conscientious attendance.
No final exam.
