Course Description

This survey course on the relationship between ideational content and aesthetic form includes in-depth, close readings of works by William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Edward Taylor as representatives of the Puritan period; and of Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Elizabeth Ashbridge, and Phillis Wheatley as representatives of the Revolutionary War Period. Coverage of the nineteenth century includes very close readings of prose by Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau; poems and stories by Edgar Allen Poe; romances by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Francis Watkins Harper; and poems and fiction by Herman Melville.

Grading Policy

There will be three grading exercises, of an objective kind.
There is a strict attendance policy.
