Course Description

Romance, Sentimentality, and Resistance--
"Books continue each other," Virginia Woolf remarked in A Room of One's Own. "E 314L: Women's Popular Genres" will carry on Woolf's project, exploring connections across time and genre in women writers and their writing by recovering, connecting, and celebrating women's voices. In this course we will trace the popular themes of romance, sentiment, and resistance in essays, poems, short stories, and novels from the early Renaissance period until today. The methods we will use to investigate these texts include feminist and postcolonial theories, and historical, textual, and close reading methodologies to familiarize the student with literary interpretation and writing.

Grading Policy

60%--Three six-page papers
20%--Three prospecti and literature reviews
10%--Weekly one-page writing assignments
10%--Three group projects
