Course Description

Restricted to Students in the English Honors Program.

This course is designed to prepare and assist students in the English Honors Program in writing their honors theses. During the course of the semester, students will be introduced to the conventions of academic writing and documentation as practiced in literary criticism, practice strategies for doing research in the field, and survey the different areas of English studies. Students who are writing a creative thesis will be encouraged to think of their own work critically by exploring critical responses to literary works they admire.

As part of the course, students will learn how to use the rich resources for literary research here at the University of Texas. A particular feature of the course will be to introduce students to the collections--both printed and manuscript--of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center: they will be required to learn how to find and use these materials, as well as explore their value for textual studies.

The final goal of the course will be to have students generate, write, and revise a formal prospectus to serve as the basis for their honors thesis. To this end, students will be required to complete a series of practical written exercises over the course of the semester designed to assist them in preparing a final prospectus.

Attendance is required in all classes.
