This course is an introduction to the phonetics and phonology of the English language. The focus of the course is descriptive rather than theoretical. Topics include the following:

• Patterns of Intonation
• Major accent systems of English
• Phonetics and phonology of learners of English as a second language
• Pronunciation and English spelling
