Course Description

E 327 is a course on early English fiction that will emphasize the emergence of the novel as a distinctive literary form. We will consider major fiction writers of the period in pairs: Defoe and Swift, Richardson and Fielding, Johnson and Sterne, Austen and Peacock.

Grading Policy

20% 2 short papers (3-4 pages)
40% 1 longer paper (6-8 pages)
10% 8 brief (page or less) memos (or position papers)
20% Final exam
10% Attendance and contribution
