In this survey of American literature from the Civil War to the present, we will examine the construction and expansion of the U.S. literary canon. Of particular interest will be the expression of distinctly different "American" voices across regional, cultural, racial, and social boundaries. Our study will also include a consideration of how these voices are enhanced or tempered by the form and/or genre in which they are expressed.
